City Council members approve force main repair

DUNCAN — A leak for the eastside force main forced the Duncan City Council to treat the situation as a an emergency.

The city council approved authorizing the city staff to seek bids to repair the force main at a cost not to exceed $25,000.

Scott Vaughn, Public Works director, said the force main, which helps pump sewer water, will probably cost less than the amount requested. The project would be funded from the Sewer Main Extensions account.

This is the second time recently the pipe has started leaking.

The last time the pipe was repaired, it was only a temporary repair.

Vaughn said there is difficulty in repairing the force main because it is an asbestos cement pipe.

“We’re not geared up to handle and dispose of asbestos pipe,” Vaughn said.

To repair the pipe, about 40 feet of 12 inch pipe would have to be replaced for a permanent fix.

And making sure the pipe is repair is imperative, Vaughn said, especially because it deals with sewage water.

“Every time we have a leak in a sewage line, it’s in violation of our regulations,” he said. “With this second leak, we need to consider it an emergency.”

In addition to discussing the force main, the city council also took action on a resolution for favorable consideration of affordable housing.

The council considered an application from Arcadian Housing Limited Partnership to the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency for tax credits award.

This will allow the partnership to rehabilitate 48 apartment units at the existing Duncan Village Apartments complex on Plato Road.

This project would keep with the city’s affordable housing strategies and comprehensive plan. The resolution will accompany the tax credits application as it heads to the Oklahoma Housing Finance Agency.
