Just nights after Jamie McMurray won the Daytona 500, Cub Scout Pack 415 had its own car races with their annual pinewood derby. More than 20 Cub Scouts gathered at Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church Wednesday night bringing the cars that they had fixed up ready to race in preparation for the district race held in Chickasha March 6.
Cubmaster David Hurlocker separated the scouts into a double-elimination bracket that would see one scout come from behind and win the entire bracket.
Chase Royer, a Bear Cub Scout, lost his first race of the evening placing him in the loser’s bracket. Royer came up through the loser’s bracket to face Ethan Absher who had not lost a race all evening. In the first race between the two Scouts, Royer came away with the victory. With that having been Absher’s first loss the two had to race again switching lanes on the two-lane track. Scouts in the audience cheered on both their fellow Scouts to see which Scout would come away with first place. In what was one of the closest races of the evening, Royer came out on top.
Through out the evening Hurlocker reminded the boys that these races would be similar to the races that they would be having in districts.
“I was trying to show my scouts how things would be different once they got to districts,” Hurlocker said. “I did not want it to be much different so I let them have an official weigh in and then that was it they were not allowed to make modifications afterwards.”
At the district races that the scouts will be competing in the scouts will have a certain criteria that they must follow:
n Cars must be constructed from the official Pinewood Derby kits that are provided to the scouts. The axles and wheels provided with that kit are the only ones authorized for use.
n Cars shall not exceed a maximum of seven inches in length, including accessories such as tail pipes, bumpers, etc. that may be added.
n Overall width of car from outside of wheel to outside of wheel shall not exceed two and three quarter inches.
n Cars may be weighted not to exceed five ounces.
n Once a car has been accepted for racing by the inspection team, only race officials will handle the car. It cannot be removed for any reason until it has been eliminated from competition.
Hurlocker said that he is proud of what his Scouts have done so far and was proud of the sportsmanship that some of them showed during the races Wednesday.
“I try to teach my Scouts the importance of good values and sportsmanship,” Hurlocker said. “I show my Scouts that it is important to not gloat when they win something to shake the other persons hand and tell them good job.”
