DMS students ready for Red Ribbon Week

DUNCAN — A red ribbon can make a statement. For Duncan Middle Schoolers, that statement is “I’m drug free.”

DMS is celebrating Red Ribbon Week from today through Friday.

And all students and teachers will be given red ribbons, stickers and bookmarks to teach and remind them the importance of living a drug free life.

“I think it’s important because it raises awareness of how drugs can affect you,” Jessica Hale, student council vice president, said. “They could really ruin your life and relationships.”

The middle school student council is heading up the week.

As part of the annual celebration, each homeroom class will participate in a door decorating contest.

Through the contest, classes will provide education information, while making a statement of why it’s important to be drug free. The doors will be judged Friday.

In previous years, the doors have provided statistical information. One class went so far as to survey all students and provide a statistics of drug use of DMS students.

The student council members have been meeting to discuss the week. But they’ve also been getting informed on the hazards themselves to be better prepared. The idea is to make sure the students know the hazards so they can teach others.

Student Council President Graham Cox said Red Ribbon Week is important to the school and its students because of how harmful drugs can be. He said the week is a reminder to them.

“It stresses the importance of a drug-free life,” Cox said.

Hale said the goal of the week is to let students know of the drug hazards and to keep them on a drug-free path. She hopes students will listen to the message and will follow through with the ideals of Red Ribbon Week.

“I hope they realize how dangerous drugs can be so they won’t do them,” Hale said.

For Cox, getting students to see the harm drugs can cause is primary goal.

“Drugs are bad,” Cox said.

This year, they will get a chance to hear U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, as he is the keynote speaker and is expected to arrive just before 5 p.m. for the event.
    Inhofe, R-Tulsa, is a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and has been instrumental in the passing of the Water Resources Development Act of 2013, or S. 601. The measure passed 83-14 in the Senate on Wednesday and authorizes new projects for water infrastructure for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
