One dead in late night house fire

Widow critically injured from blaze

DUNCAN — An elderly man is dead and his widow also fights for her life after a house fire happened around 2 a.m. Friday in the Central High community.

There were four people in the trailer house and Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney said that the elderly couple’s grandsons were next door and actually saw the fire and went in to try and rescue everyone.

“The grandchildren went into the house to wake everyone. They were able to get everyone but the man who was almost 70 and in a wheelchair,” McKinney said Friday.

One of the young men was overcome by smoke and did suffer some burns.

The elderly woman was air-evacuated to the burn center in Oklahoma City.

The victim’s body has been sent to the state medical examiner for confirmation that it was him.

The house was fully involved when Central High Fire Department arrived on the scene.

Duncan Fire Department also responded for mutual assist to the home at Route 2, Box 280, on Osage Rd., 1/2 mile west of the Bypass.

The emergency 911 call came in to county dispatch at 1:30 a.m.

McKinney said there were two other people in the home but the others were younger, not children though. Everyone was taken to Oklahoma City he said.

An SCSO investigator and the state fire marshal, Judah Shepherd were interviewing family members Friday. Shepherd had spent most of the day on scene, McKinney said.

He was notified within an hour of the fire.

It is standard procedure for the state fire marshal to be involved when there is a death.

No foul play is suspected.

This year, they will get a chance to hear U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe, as he is the keynote speaker and is expected to arrive just before 5 p.m. for the event.
    Inhofe, R-Tulsa, is a senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and has been instrumental in the passing of the Water Resources Development Act of 2013, or S. 601. The measure passed 83-14 in the Senate on Wednesday and authorizes new projects for water infrastructure for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
