Fire damages Duncan home

DUNCAN — Multiple Duncan Fire Department engines responded to a structure fire Saturday afternoon in the 900 block of W. Stephens Ave. after two unidentified juvenile males started the fire in a shed attached to the house, spreading fire into the home.

DFD firefighters and Duncan Police Department officers were dispatched to 907 W. Stephens Ave. around 1:15 p.m. after a fire started by two young boys ignited the inside of the shed they may have been playing in.

“Two little kids were playing with spray paint and a lighter in the shed and were unable to put it out,” Samantha Paxson, a resident of the house, said. “We were at the store and the oldest (children) were out.”

No injuries were reported at the scene.

The shed was located on the north side of the home and fire spread into the two back rooms, destroying the shed and causing damage to the home, DPD Detective John Byers said.

DPD officers closed off access to the block while firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

“There is smoke and water damage throughout the home with the house suffering 100 percent smoke damage and 95 percent water damage,” Byers said.

Located in the backyard was a motor vehicle that was destroyed by the fire as it spread across the backyard.

Neighbor Clint Baker was baby-sitting two children when he heard a boom come from the home, located on the east side of the fire.

“I was tending to the kids and heard a boom and didn’t notice the house was on fire until I heard the fire sirens,” Baker said.

Byers said he was unaware of any explosions which happened on scene but DFD firefighters were keeping a close eye on the scene in case of the fire rekindling.
