For Cameron University students, school is back in session. And while they may be sitting in classrooms learning about English, science and mathematics, outside of the classroom, they’ll get to learn about music appreciation.
Cameron University’s CU@SC series will start its 2010-11 season with a concert featuring Red Dirt rocker Johnny Cooper. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 11, in the Simmons Center Theatre.
All Cameron students get one free ticket to the concert with their Cameron University ID card. Additional tickets are available in advance from the Simmons Center or at the door.
The series began in the 2004-05 school year as a way to involve the Cameron University-Duncan students
Jennifer Elbert, assistant to the dean of the School of Liberal Arts and the CU@SC coordinator, said, “The Cameron administration thought we needed to give our Cameron University-Duncan students the same opportunities as our main campus students.
“It’s also our mission to enhance the economic development and culture of the community.”
Each year, students fill out surveys to provide feedback on what type of things they would like to see in the series. Elbert said one thing they wanted was to see more headliners, like Cooper.
Cooper, 21, hails from Wichita Falls, Texas, and began performing at 15-years-old. He recorded his first CD, a live album, when he was 16-years-old. Since that early beginning, he has released three albums.
Elbert said Cameron has used Cooper on the main campus numerous times, and it was determined that Cooper would be a good addition to the CU@SC series.
“I talked to his road manager, which is his father Jimmy, and he said Sept. 11 is Johnny’s birthday,” Elbert said.
She said the series grows each year, depending on what the students want to see.
“We want to give them what they want,” Elbert said. “We want to involve the community as much as possible.”
The program is made possible through aid from the Oklahoma Arts Council. The CU@SC concert series will continue Dec. 10 with a Victorian holiday tea. The series is through the Cameron University School of Liberal Arts.
