Candidates make pitch in Duncan

Light turnout at the county fairgrounds

DUNCAN — A crowd of nearly 70 people turned out at the Stephens County Fairgrounds Tuesday night to hear candidates make a pitch to potential voters heading into the Nov. 6 election.

At least 11 candidates for offices covering all or parts of Stephens County took part in the forum, the second of three sponsored by the Committee for Balanced Government.

Chris Deal, President and CEO of the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who moderated the debate, suggested the light turnout might be due to the presidential debate scheduled the same evening.

The first forum was held in Velma on Oct. 9 and a third is set for 7 p.m. next Tuesday at the Empire School cafeteria.

The forums were billed as a chance for people to listen to candidates in person and be a part of the political process in Stephens County.

Taking part in Tuesday’s forum were:

- Democrat Stewart Meyer of Chickasha in House District 51, which includes part of Stephens County. Republican Scott Biggs had a prior commitment.

- Republican incumbent state Sen. Don Barrington of Lawton and his Democrat challenger in District 31, Tony Terrill of Lawton. The district covers parts of Duncan and western Stephens County.

- Democrat Mike Fullerton and Republican Corey Brooks in a newly drawn state Senate District 43, which includes much of Stephens County.

- Democrat Todd Churchman, who is seeking re-election for District 2 county commissioner, and Republican Lonnie Estes.

- Republican Sheriff Wayne McKinney and his challenger, Democrat Jimmy Williams, who is now police chief in Marlow.

- Democrat Donna Bebo and independent RJ Harris, who are running against Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Tom Cole in the state’s 4th congressional district.

Also present was State Representative Joe Dorman, who serves the state’s District 65.
