Duncan Regional Hospital, Fort Sill to host mass casualty disaster drill

DUNCAN — A number of soldiers from Fort Sill will be making an appearance at Duncan Regional Hospital as part of a mass casualty exercise drill on Friday morning.

Working with the army post, Reynolds Army Hospital, several Lawton area hospitals and Southwest Region 3 Medical Emergency Resource Center, DRH will be receiving around 15 to 20 soldiers as part of a disaster drill that will involve approximately 200 people.

“Disaster drills, like this one, are a required element for our hospital as part of Joint Commission,” states Patty Wininger BS, RN, CEN, Emergency Preparedness Coordinator for DRH. “We feel this is an excellent opportunity to support a regional agency and entity.”

The fictional premise for the drill will be an explosion, involving hazardous chemicals, taking place at a battalion chain-of-command ceremony on the parade grounds at the base.

The wounded soldiers transported to DRH will be in various states of injury, which include fractures, trauma, lacerations, blast injuries, burns and chemical exposure.

“We should see the solders arrive by vans sometime around 9:30 a.m.,” stated Wininger. “The soldiers will be in uniform but no weapons. They will be tagged as to whether or not they are a red, yellow or green (red meaning critical, yellow meaning intermediate and green meaning minor) injury.”

Vans transporting the soldiers will arrive by vans sometime around 9:30 a.m., Wininger said. The soldiers will be in full uniform but carrying no weapons and will be tagged by color, according to the level of injury sustained.

Wininger hopes the drill will be beneficial to the hospital staff in preparing for an emergency.

“We are to implement our hospital trauma and triage protocols, hospital incident command system and command center, utilize communication systems, disaster charting mechanism, patient tracking, labor pool, medical staff, transfer agreements, mutual aid agreements, memorandums of understandings and part of our decontamination process.”
