Duncan singers become ‘hit’ with flash mob show

DUNCAN — A Duncan woman has found a way to enjoy the spirit of the season and also share it with those around her. Tara Scott has the gift of song and this year she and a friend started a thread on Facebook about having a flash mob.

Before she knew it, they had several people who were willing to rehearse and join in.

And last weekend, that group of more than 150 people showed up at the Norman Mall and went in and began singing Christmas songs.

“It’s crazy, just two crazy gals who don’t mind making fools out of themselves,” Scott shared and laughed. But, they aren’t being labled fools. Quite the opposite. The “Flash Mob” is attracting attention throughout Oklahoma. Word quickly spread through social media and news outlets. And now other retailers are requesting their presence.

“Angie Guice, she’s a friend of mine in Oklahoma City, and I decided to do this. We’re having so much fun.”

Guice’s history is also in music, having run the Oklahoma Opry years ago, which is how Scott knew her. Scott is a professional singer. Her husband, Chad, has joined in as the guy with the video. It’s what is attracting attention after he uploaded it to YouTube.

But for Scott, it’s more than just a group of people joining in song. She said that it’s about being able to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

“It’s very moving to have all those people singing and praising to God. It’s really something when you are there in person and can hear it like that,” she said.

Scott said that a pastor at a church in Moore even let them use his church to rehearse. About 75 people showed up that time. Then when they were to actually put the flash mob into motion, at least 150 showed up in the Norman Mall parking lot. Scott said probably each person may have brought with them at least five people too.

“We could not move. We had the whole mall going,” she said.

One of those there was 12-year-old Mackenzie Cook, who is a seventh-grader at Duncan Middle School.

“Being a part of the flash mob was a great experience that I will always remember,” she said. “When my friends at school talk about Christmas, it is only about what they are getting or where they are going for the holidays. It was so nice to be with a group of people who only want to spread the true meaning of Christmas to others and I think everyone at the mall who saw it felt that way too.”

Scott said she believes the flash mob was the perfect time, with everyone being able to think about family and friends, after recent events nationwide.

“We’ll be doing it again this Sunday in Oklahoma City,” she said. But the location is undisclosed. And what about Duncan?

She couldn’t say for sure, because she knows that everyone is quite busy and it does involve getting permission from a facility to perform.
