Stuart Ranch of Waurika wins Champion Team award

Oklahoma City — Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association Range Round-Up has been an event for 26 years to raise money for children.

Known as “Cowboys Helping  Kids,” the event brings working ranches together and for 13 years, the proceeds have gone to Children’s Miracle Network. Over the 26 years that OCA has partnered with Ford, more than $395,000 has been raised.

Twelve teams of 17 ranches participated in this year’s Range Round-Up, with Drummond Land and Cattle Company of Pawhuska taking home the Championship title. They placed first in the Wild Cow Milking and team penning events. Team members were Tim Drummond, Ladd Drummond, Lynn Thompson, Josh Sellers and Tim Kill.

Presenting them with the title trophy was Terry Forst of Waurika, who is the OCA president.

Finishing in third place was the Pitchfork and Barrett Ranches of Waurika and Ryan. A second-year participant, this ranch team placed in the top three in two events.

The Pitchfork Ranch, a 127-year-old ranch of more than 10,000 acres includes a cow/calf operation and more than 2,000 yearlings. The Barrett Ranch, a third generation ranch, also has rich history dating back to 1896. Rash Barrett III now owns and operates the family ranch.

The Drummond history includes 25 years as a participant in the annual event and five-time champion. The Drummond family began ranching in the early 1900s and has served as a lifestyle for more than four generations. It runs several thousand stocker cattle and about 2,000 cows, according to OCA.

Trailing the Drummond team were the cowboys of Lazy Rafter Slash and Whitmire Ranches who managed to place in the top three for saddle bronc riding, team doctoring, team branding and the Wild Horse Race. These ranches have made Lenapah home base, with a custom preconditioning operation, stocker cattle and raising ranch horses.

The Whitmire Ranch oversees about 1,700 cow and calf pairs and 600 replacement females, with more than 17,000 acres spread throughout Oklahoma and Kansas.

Forst’s Stuart Ranch also earned an award. The Tough Hand Award (buckles) went to Pat Butler of Stuart Ranch, and E.J. Gagan of Lazy Rafter Slash and Whitmire Ranches.

The Top Horse was ridden by Ron Redford of the Broken O’s Ranches earned the Top Horse award for his ride, and he was selected by judges to also receive a Top Hand Award and custom-made saddle.

The event also included a working ranch horse competition, with the top ranch horse award going to James Gholson of Pitchfork Ranch, owner/rider of the horse.

What shapes the character of a community are the people in it, along with how they contribute to make it better.
There is no shortage of active community members in Duncan, however, some seem to go above and beyond. That would include Ken Jones, director of supportive services division at the Association of South Central Oklahoma Governments (ASCOG).

    1. The first step in getting organized to discard recipes we’ve never used and aren’t likely to use. If you just can’t bear to throw them away — yet — put them in a separate folder or envelope and date it. If you haven’t used them in a year, toss.
