Halloween to be celebrated on Halloween

DUNCAN — On Wednesday, Duncan children will don their costumes and head out for trick-or-treating.

This year, Halloween is on the day traditionally celebrated as Halloween. The City of Duncan notified The Banner that the city does recognize the holiday.

According to a resolution approved by the Duncan City Council on Oct. 26, 2010: “Halloween and the trick-or-treat experience that is held in conjunction with this occasion will be held on the evening of Oct. 31, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which event it will be celebrated on Saturday evening, Oct. 30.”

This means anytime Halloween falls on a day other than Sunday, it will be celebrated Oct. 31. Since it is marked on the calendar as being on a Wednesday, that means in Duncan, it will be celebrated on Wednesday.

By keeping the date the same, the City of Duncan hopes to make it easier for Duncan residents to know when Halloween will be celebrated.

On the other hand, the resolution doesn’t specify a time when children can begin trick-or-treating, although most children will be in school until at least 3 p.m. on Halloween. Some parents prefer to take their younger children out before it becomes too dark, but the timeline for trick-or-treating is left up to the discretion of the parents/guardians.

“The City of Duncan has considered the convenience of the citizens of the City of Duncan, and determined that it would be appropriate to designate a permanent date for the Halloween celebration,” according to the resolution. “It is deemed desirable for the council to give permanent authorization for the approval for such event, and hereby agrees to set this celebration by resolution in order to accomplish this on a permanent basis.”

So parents, that means, trick-or-treating, trunk-or-treating and Halloween parties will happen Wednesday in Duncan.
