Carolyn Rodgers finds it difficult to capture the beauty of crapemyrtles in oil paints.
But she invited area photographers to see what they could capture with their cameras.
Rodgers, Duncan Beautification Committee chairwoman, headed a photo competition where the participants took photos of crapemyrtles.
About 100 entries were received, which was about twice the number of entries from last year.
They are on display at Duncan Public Library.
The winner of this year’s competition was Lisa Scifres.
A large ribbon indicates it as Best of Show. The image is a crapemyrtle composed in the lower right hand corner, with a wrought iron fence in the background. The entire image is bathed in beautiful light.
A second photograph of Scifres also received the honorable mention. Debbie Dugger came in second place, while Sonya Ables took third place. Duggar’s image was a creative composite of the Chisholm Trail monument at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center, again with the crapemyrtle as the focus of the overall photograph. Ables’ third place entry featured the 905 locomotive in Fuqua Park in the background of crapemyrtles.
Scifres was surprised her photo was chosen. She entered five items, which was three more than she entered in last year’s contest. Although her photos last year didn’t receive any attention, she made up for that with her win and honorable mention acknowledgment this year.
“My favorite part is getting together with everybody and seeing their photos,” Scifres said about the competition. Scifres, Ables and Duggar are all friends, too.
“It went real well,” Rodgers said about the competition. “We’re just trying to make people aware of crapemyrtles and the beauty they bring. We are the Crapemyrtle Capital of Oklahoma.
“There was quite a variety this year.”
The judges, Michael Harris and Toni Hopper, chose the winning images based on several things. Among them, selective use of focus, composition and lighting. Also, they considered print quality. Photographers names were covered so the judges were not aware of who had entered the contest.
Scifres started taking photos of crapemyrtles for this year’s competition when the bushes began to bloom, which was around July. And she kept her eyes on the lookout for anything that would make for a great photo.
“I got one of my photos when one of my neighbors put out a flag,” Scifres said. “The other was at the Prairie House.”
This year’s winning photo, along with last year’s winner, will be framed and hung in the Duncan Chamber of Commerce and Industry following a month long exhibit at the library.
Rodgers said the photos will be on display until Sept. 20. Throughout the month, people will get an opportunity to vote on their favorite photos.
On Sept. 20, there will be a meet the photographers reception at the library. At that point, the winner of the people’s choice award will be revealed.
Rodgers said the photos make for a great display at the library, and she’s excited people will have time to check out this year’s entries.
“I think they’ll enjoy them,” Rodgers said.
