McMichael to entertain at storytelling festival

DUNCAN — The Duncan Senior Citizens Center, a United Way agency, is hosting its Fourth Annual Storytelling Festival at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. There will be entertainers at the event who will be storytelling and singing.

Sam McMichael is a long-time resident of the Apache community. He grew up in the rich storytelling tradition of Southwest Oklahoma hearing tales of the early days of the state; good times and bad, tall tales, fish stories, hunting stories and brags.

He has worked this wealth of material into the fabric of his own experiences and fashioned unique stories full of pathos, humor and surprise.

McMichael has traveled Oklahoma as a professional storyteller for the past 20 years, spinning his yarns at schools, fairs, libraries, festivals and conventions

Gale McCray is a public speaker, actor and baseball expert. McCray’s, “One Man Looks at Baseball,” draws raves for its humor.

Now living in Fort Worth, Texas, McCray grew up in Lawton and played on Lawton High School’s 1959 state championship baseball team. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research and will soon be seen as the baseball commissioner in a presentation of the play, “Damn Yankees,” in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

During the festival, Ed Foley, retired music director from Marlow, will sing mountain stories. Foley will accompany himself on the mountain dulcimer. He is currently the music director for the Lakeside Baptist Church.

Charles Kriss writes poetry and tells humorous stories from his experiences. He is a frequent speaker in the Lawton area, a graduate of Cameron University and a retired school teacher.

Kriss is from Cache and is presently serving as interim pastor at First Baptist Church in Indiahoma.

Steve Kardaleff, will emcee the program. Kardaleff lives in Lawton and is a semi-retired businessman.

He’s taught folklore and mythology, and fundamentals of public speaking at Cameron University. He is a free-lance storyteller and former executive director of the National Storytelling Network.

There is no admission fee for the festival and refreshments will be served at intermission.
