Artists ready for annual holiday show

Duncan Art Guild show reception tonight

DUNCAN — A Duncan fall tradition returns this weekend with the 2012 Duncan Art Guild Fine Arts Holiday Show. With changes expected in next year’s show, this could be the last time that Duncanites can see this show as they remember it from years past.

“We are pretty consistent with what we do,” Show Chairman Janice Kirksey said. “It will be different from next year’s show in that we are going to separate the shows and create a photography-only show, a three-dimensional show and a fine arts show.”

This year, the 120 to 130 art submission from about 32 artists will be shown together in one art show, no matter the genre of the art.

“The only thing we request is no questionable material,”   Kirksey said. “Since I am the show chairman, I reserve the right to not show everything if it is not appropriate, but that has never been an issue in Duncan.”

The art will be on display for an opening reception from 5:30 to 8 p.m. today at the Stephens County Fair & Expo Center. The reception is open to the public and free of charge. The show will also be on display from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1-4 p.m. Sunday.

Awards will be given to winners in three categories with other prizes also available for a total of approximately $1000 in prize money.

“There will be three categories this year with ‘People and Portraits’ being one, ‘Animals and Pets’ being another and ‘Landscape and Still Life’ being the third,” Kirksey said. “There will be a first, second, and third in each of those categories. There will also be a ‘Best of Show’ and a ‘People’s Choice.’ The ‘People’s Choice’ is always chosen by the people in attendance at the reception on Friday night.”

Besides the award chosen by participating visitors, the winners will be chosen by Jacquelyn Knapp, the guest juror.

“It is a juried show and this year, our judge is Jacquelyn Knapp,”  Kirksey said. “She is a professor out at the USAO in Chickasha.”

The deadline for submitting art pieces for the show has passed but the show is free to attend and view during the display’s hours this weekend. For more information, call Janice Kirksey at 252-7488.
