Comanche runs Waurika out of gym

WAURIKA — If there was any question about the Comanche Indians’ athleticism coming into this season, all doubt was most likely removed in the Waurika gym.

Comanche outran, out jumped and subsequently, outscored Waurika, beating the Eagles 76-52 in front of about 500 fans at Waurika high school Friday night. Jacob Dunlap had 24 points on 8-of-19 shooting for the Indians while going 7-for-10 from the free throw line.

Head coach Kenny Weast said he was pleased with the way his team came out and played, despite some easy baskets his team allowed early in the game.

“We played a little sloppy there in the beginning,” Weast said. “We gave them some easy shots under the basket and allowed them to get shots we’re not supposed to give up.”

The Indians finished the game 29-for-65 (44%) from the field as Josh Peevy netted 18 points to go with 8-of-13 shooting. Peevy made his first two three-point shots of the game, igniting the Indians to a 21-8 first quarter lead.

“Dunlap and Peevy stepped up and hit a few big shots for us,” Weast said. “That got us rolling a bit.”

Waurika shot 21-of-63 (33%) from the field but had trouble moving the ball across half court with the full court pressure Comanche didn’t let up on until late in the fourth quarter.

The lead was 42-25 at halftime, as Waurika wasn’t able to get much closer in the second half, giving up eight quick points off turnovers in the span of about three minutes. The Eagles finished the game with 23 turnovers and Comanche had 15. Comanche also out shot Waurika on the free throw line, making 15-of-25 as the Eagles were just 11-for-21. The Indians made four of their seven three-point attempts as Waurika went 0-for-10 behind the arc.

Levi Henderson led Waurika in points, scoring 13 off 5-of-7 shooting. Nathan Howard and Matt Wilkerson each added 10 points for Waurika.

“Our full court press really put the pressure on them going into the second half,” Weast said.

Freshman Tyler Olheiser added 11 points for Comanche, as the it led 57-37 going into the fourth quarter.
