ELGIN — The Marlow Outlaws let one slip away to the Elgin Owls Friday night, losing 71-50 after being down just three points at halftime.
Senior Drew Wortham scored 23 points and Cody Brown added 19 but the Outlaws saw foul trouble all night long, having four of their players foul out of the game.
“The game was closer than the score indicated,” head coach Jason Wilkerson said. “I had four guys foul out just as it was a six-point game with about three minutes left in the fourth quarter.”
The Outlaws shot 14-of-32 (43%) from the field, and 4-for-7 from behind the arc but made just 11-of-24 of their free throws. Turnovers, Wilkerson said, was what really hurt them.
“We turned the ball over 26 times,” he said. “But it was in the second and third quarter that really hurt us in giving them the ball.”
Marlow’s offense had a trouble getting going mid-way through the game Wilkerson said, and couldn’t find its rhythm in the second half as the whistle was often blown.
“We had a chance there but couldn’t get rolling,” he said. “Drew and Cody had big nights for us but just couldn’t put it all together.”
Marlow had eight assists and 37 rebounds to go with its effort, but allowed too many uncontested shots.
“The first half we were playing well and were up 13-12 after the first (quarter), but turning the ball over just did it in.”
Marlow hosts Comanche for an area rivalry game next Friday night.
