MARLOW — MARLOW — With a few weeks under their belt, the Marlow wrestling team is starting to see the hard work in practice pay off.
Last week, several of the Outlaws went to compete in the Oklahoma Open in Norman, posting impressive wins over wrestlers invited from all across the country. Head coach Keith Kizzar said he was glad to see some of his players get some extra work and confidence going into the first half of the season.
“I took three guys up there,” Kizzar said. “Tanner Keck, Mykel Moreno and Ryan Brooks. Moreno was at 160 and he won three matches and lost two. His two losses were to one guy who was a state champion and to another guy from Florida.”
Kizzar said the tournament and the last few weeks’ practices have been as much about physical training as it has mental preparation, getting to a point where the guys can just react on the mat instead of thinking through every move.
“We’re getting better,” he said. “We’re working hard. The guys have done really well. It was good for them to go to the Oklahoma Open to see some live action.
“Keck was at 170 (weight class) and beat two nationally ranked kids from Oklahoma, both who had already signed with colleges. It got his confidence higher and he just had an outstanding tourney, beating those two guys. Brooks too, he beat a kid from Iowa City.”
Kizzar said he is looking at the season to have a couple of different parts, with pre-season over and this being the first half. Now’s the time, he said, to work the most on conditioning and technique — allowing the players to focus on what they need to improve on later in the year rather than worrying about fundamentals. This time of year, though, gets a bit frenetic with so many breaks and time away from school.
“Thanksgiving (break) really throws you off,” Kizzar said. “We have now and then the Christmas break. We’re going to hit it hard because we don’t have a lot of days of practice so we try to get in here as much as possible. We’ve have duals, tournaments and at best, can practice three days a week.”
Today, Marlow will travel to Lawton High for a dual but will have several players absent giving the Wolverines an 18-point advantage right off the bat. Still, he says it will be good for the guys to see live action against someone else for a change.
“We’ll get in some live wrestling tomorrow,” he said “Get some adrenaline going. We’ll have a few holes, but yeah, we’ll get the kids to see how some of these guys are.”
