Duncan offense comes alive in rout over Chicks

Clint Miller rushes for 171 yards in first half as line dominates

DUNCAN — Leading into Friday night’s game, Duncan head coach Jim Holloway stated that he wanted to see his team run the ball more effectively. If only everybody could get what they wanted so easily.

Clint Miller had a breakout game with 171 yards, all in the first half, to lead Duncan (2-2, 1-0) to a 48-19 win over Chickasha (0-4, 0-1). As a team, the Demons rolled up a season-high 269 yards rushing behind an offensive line that pounded the Chicks into submission. By the second quarter, Miller’s first contact was coming five to 10 yards down the field, many times running into his own blockers.

“Our line stepped it up, they had a big improvement tonight,” Miller said. “This game gave us a lot of confidence for the games coming up. My eyes were pretty wide open with the holes they made.”

The Demons scored all of their points in the first half, putting the game away with 35 points in the second quarter. Quarterback Houston Johnson only threw the ball six times, but rushed for 46 in a game that was decided in the trenches.

“It’s nice to score, it’s been so lone since I have seen

touchdowns,” Duncan coach Jim Holloway said. “After the second possession, I think our guys new it was over.

“This football team has to be able to run the ball, we have too many people there that can play.”

Duncan signaled its intent on its first drive of the game. Miller ripped off a couple of 11-yard gains but a holding penalty short-circuited the drive, forcing a punt.

Chickasha wasted no time in getting on the board as quarterback Chase Rodgers found wideout Joe Euwins matched up one-on-one with Jacob Miears. Euwins used his height advantage to come down with the ball and then outran the secondary for a 68-yard score. The extra point failed.

Duncan retook possession and took over the game, driving 59 yards for its first score. Facing fourth-and-three, Johnson found Axel Rauh wide-open for a 20-yard score, the fourth time the duo have hooked up for a touchdown this season. The extra point by Levi Huff was wide, but it would be the only one he would miss on the night.

Duncan caught its first break of the game late in the first quarter on a special teams play. Rakee Stevenson tried to field a Huff punt inside the five and it proved to be an unbelievably blunder as Duncan recovered the ball at the four. One play later, Miller scored his first touchdown of the season on a four-yard run.

The touchdown would be the first of three, in a three-minute span. Chickasha punted on its next possession and the Demons scored in two plays, with Johnson carrying the ball in from 20-yards out for the score. The Chicks got the ball back, and promptly turned the ball over. A Rodgers pass went into the arms of Casy Rowell, who did some fancy broken field running in returning the ball 31-yards for the score.

That would be the start of the scoring parade for Duncan. The Demon’s Shawn Hughes recovered a fumble and the offense scored in five plays, with Miller running it in from 10 yards out. The Demons entered the game plus-three and forced five turnovers in the game.

“I don’t know if we came out with the intensity we needed in the first two series,” Duncan defensive coordinator Kim Longest said. “I thought we hit tonight, we were more physical.”

The Demons added two more touchdowns in the last three minutes of the half. Miller scored his third touchdown of the night on a two-yard run and Tyler Wilkins returned a punt 58 yards to make the score 48-6.

Chickasha would score two more touchdowns in the second half on the arm of Rodgers to account for the final score. Rodgers finished the game 10-of-17 for 246 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

“It was a lot more fun tonight,” Duncan offensive coordinator Todd Hudson said. “It’s nice to score touchdowns again.

“I was really proud of our offensive line. They dominated the game upfront. I was also proud of Clint, he ran the ball hard and made yards after contact.”

Duncan will be on the road this week to take on Altus. The Bulldogs are coming off of a 15-14 win over El Reno.
