Brigman, Van der Walt remain in lead

Local golfers Boles, Deaver miss cut

DUNCAN — After Round 2 of the Halliburton Southwest Oklahoma Classic, Jaxon Brigman and Dawie Van der Walt still sat atop the leaderboard, each tied at 7-under and three strokes ahead of the pack.

Day 2 saw a stark contrast in weather, as gusting winds and variable clouds turned to temperatures in the mid 90s and clear skies.

Brigman and Van der Walt, who each shot 5-under on Day 1, extended their lead by a stroke over Steve Friesen, who still sat in third at - 4. Brett Callas, Tyler Leon, Jesse Schulte and Reino Deetlefs were all tied for third with Friesen at 4-under.

Friday’s magic number was 4-over, and 51 players missed, including local golfers Mitch Boles (+7) and Al Deaver (+19). Boles rebounded from a 7-over par performance on Day 1 to shoot even par on Friday. The former Marlow Outlaw said that the wind on Day 1 wasn’t a factor.

“There are no excuses, we play in the wind out there all the time,” Boles said. “I just don’t play as much as I used to and it showed that first day.”

Boles added that if a few more putts could have dropped on Friday, he might have made the cut.

“I birdied No. 2 and bogeyed the last hole, but there were a few putts in between that could have made a difference,” Boles said. “Either way, it was fun to get out here and compete. All of the tour guys have raved about the course, so that was nice.”

A total of 18 golfers entered Saturday under par, with several making jumps up the leaderboard from the first round. Michael Arnaud and Todd Rossetti each improved their score by six strokes to get to 2-under, while Eric Hsu went from 8-over to even par. Brad Besler squeaked into Day 3 with a 12-stroke improvement at 4-over.

Jeremy Jaensonne had the lowest score of the day, shooting a 66 after shooting an 80 on Day 1.

OSU alum Brigman and Van der Walt teed off at 9:39 a.m. Saturday.
