Nice to have something in common

DG&CC, Southern Hills designed by Maxwell

The eyes of the golf world may have been turned to Tulsa this weekend for the PGA Championship.

However, Tulsa and Duncan have something in common when it comes to golf courses. Both the golf courses at Duncan Golf & Country Club and Southern Hills Country Club were designed by Perry Maxwell.

DG&CC; golf pro Junior Moody has played a lot of golf over the years and says that his favorite courses are all designed by Maxwell.

“My favorite courses to play are Perry Maxwell courses,” he said. “He also designed Dornick Hills. My favorite courses are Dornick Hills, Southern Hills and ours.”

DG&CC;’s course was built in 1921, Dornick Hills was designed from 1913 to 1923, while Southern Hills was built from 1935-36.

Moody said that all of Maxwell’s courses were similar and fair to a golfer.

“All of the greens are tight,” Moody said. “There are some holes that are tough, some that are medium and easy.”

No matter who designed the course, getting rounds in this summer hasn’t been easy. If rain hasn’t been a problem this summer, the heat has been.

“This year has been tough because of the weather,” Moody said. “July and August are the toughest on bent-grass greens. We are about 95 percent back. It has been tougher other places.

“Right now, we’re in good condition. It will be good for the Labor Day championship.”

The Labor Day championship is the oldest tournament in Oklahoma as it enters its 79th year. The dates for this year’s tournament are Aug. 31 to Sept. 3.

There will be a “horserace” at 3 p.m. Aug. 31.

There were be a flighted team competition, and the championship will be medal play, which will begin Saturday.

“Years ago it was match play,” Moody said. “Everything but the Championship Flight is team play.”

The teams will play one round of best ball, scramble and scotch.

The big draw of the tournament is the top prize for the Championship Flight, which is $5,000.

The Labor Day tourney used to draw several big-time names.

“Bob Tway has played in it. John Daly played here in 1986 or 87,” Moody said. “You lose a lot of the college players because they can’t take the money. The can still play in the tournament, they just have to sign that they can’t take the money.”
