McClennen ready to rock & roll

Comanche native to perform for area crowd

DUNCAN — In the world of music, the road to making it big is usually long and full of little steps, yet any band member will tell you, it’s worth it.

For local musician Shane McClennen, the breaks he’s getting have been a long time coming.

A 1987 graduate of Comanche High School, McClennen now resides in Duncan when he’s not off playing lead guitar for the band Cody O’Neill & the Crosswind.

“I’ve been playing for more than 20 years and have been with Crosswind for about three years,” he said. “Cody’s been with us for about eight or nine months.”

McClennen has been married for 19 years to his wife Mischa, who is also from Comanche.

While they lived in New Mexico for several years, the band allowed them the opportunity to move back home.

“We really like the location because we’re half in Oklahoma, half in Texas, so the central point is Duncan to what all is going on,” said McClennen. “When I’ve been gone a lot, it’s great to come home.”

McClennen produced the band’s first album “Trainwreck,” which is to be released later this week.

He expressed his delight in being able to promote it with a CD signing at Hastings in Duncan from 2-4 p.m. Saturday.

Additional to that, their first CD release party will take place that evening at Riley’s Place in Marlow.

“It’s happening near my hometown, a lot of bands don’t get to experience that,” he said. “We hope to see a lot of people. We’ve already gotten some calls and we hope we have a good turnout at Riley’s.”

For those wondering about the sound that Cody O’Neill & the Crosswind bring to the stage, they describe it asl Texas rock and roll.

They’ve opened and shared the stage with other artists such as Steel Magnolia, Josh Abbott, Randy Rogers, No Justice, Craig Morgan and David Allan Cole among several others.

“We’ve got country roots but we’re on the rocking edge of red dirt, so it’s a little different and good dancing music,” said McClennen. “We just played after Steel Magnolia last weekend and all the band members are strong and all our influences together brought our style.”

The guitar player said their sound reaches all generations from the young to the old. They must be doing something right because their single “Broken Angel” was the number one most requested song on 94.9 The Outlaw for 2011. Now they are getting opportunities left and right.

“The whole band is excited and we have a lot of people signing up,” said McClennen. “We didn’t know it would go this quick but it’s a great band and everyone involved are great, so we feel really good about the project.”
