13 compete for title of Miss Velma-Alma

VELMA — Thirteen young women will be vying for top honors, when the 50th annual Miss Velma-Alma Pageant is held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, in the Velma-Alma High School auditorium.

Contestants will begin the competition on Friday afternoon, participating in personal interviews with the judges. A majority of the points come from the interview.

During the evening performance, the contestants model both casual and evening wear. They will be escorted by five senior boys, who were chosen by the V-A senior student body.

Escorts for this year’s pageant are Tyler Smith, Corbin Byford, Garrett Savage, Dalton Harless and Gus Burton.

At the end of the night, Miss Photogenic and Mr. Velma-Alma will be selected and Miss Velma-Alma will be crowned.

Emcees for the evening are V-A  junior Ty Dulworth and Hannah Witter, Miss Velma-Alma 2011.

Here are profiles of the 2012 Miss Velma-Alma contestants:

- Jesse Lynn Anderson, 16, is the daughter of Billy and Sherry Anderson. Jesse is a sophomore. She is active in Beta Club, FFA, softball, basketball and golf.

After high school, Jesse plans to pursue a degree in nursing. She would also like to become a photographer and play in the U.S.A. Softball League in her spare time.

- Lyndsie Carroll, 16, is the daughter of Nicky and Nancy Carroll and Jamie Carroll. Lyndsie is a sophomore. She is a member of FFA, Beta Club, National Honor Society and the academic team.

She also participates in basketball, softball and the Comet Reading program. In the future, Lyndsie plans to attend college to obtain a degree in occupational therapy.

- Shalyn Dawn Files, 17, is the daughter of Shan and Starlet Files. Shalyn is a junior, and is a member of the softball, basketball and track teams. She was a 2010 and 2011 All-State pole vault award recipient.

Shaylyn is vice president of the junior class and a member of FFA, FCA and Beta Club. She is a Comet Reading program volunteer and was 2010 Football Homecoming Queen. After graduating from high school, Shalyn plans to attend college and major in communications.

- Chelsey Grundy, 18, is the daughter of Temple Lee and Suzy Grundy. A senior, Chelsey is active in cross country and track. She was named Duncan Banner 2008 Newcomer of the Year for cross country and in 2010, she was Class A state champion in the 1600-meter run.

She is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Student Council, the academic team and the Comet Reading program. Chelsey plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma to obtain a double major in forensic science and criminal justice.

- Whitney Hall, 17, is the daughter of Shannon and Ronda Hall. A junior, Whitney is a 2010 and 2011 Oklahoma High School Rodeo Association state champion in Girls Cutting and a 2010 National High School Rodeo Association National Cutting Champion. She is a MRCA breakaway champion and in 2010 and 2011, was named Oklahoma High School Rodeo Finalist for breakaway and team roping.

In the future, Whitney plans to attend Oklahoma State University to become a veterinarian. Eventually, she plans to return home to run the family ranch.

- Braylee Rae Henry, 16, is the daughter of J.B. and Renee Henson, and Billy Henry. Braylee is a sophomore who has participated in 4-H since she was 5 years old. She is a member of the Stephen’s County 4-H Club, serving as a teen leader and camp counselor. She is also a member of Student Council, the academic team, National Honor Society and the basketball, track and cross country teams. As a FFA member, she shows lambs.

After high school, Braylee plans to attend the University of Oklahoma to become an ultrasound technician.

- Jordan Layn, 17, is the daughter of James and Suzi Layn. Jordan is a sophomore and the president of her class. She is also a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society and the academic team.

Jordan is active in FCA, softball, basketball and cheerleading. She enjoys volunteering with the Comet Reading program.

Jordan’s future plans are to attend college, major in physical therapy and travel as much as possible before settling down.

- Haley McNeill, 18, is the daughter of Robert and Diane McNeill. The senior is valedictorian of her class and a member of both the National Honor Society and the Oklahoma Honor Society.

Haley is active in cheerleading, Beta Club, the Comet Reading program, FCA and Student Council. Haley was a 2010 Football Homecoming candidate.

She is currently completing a cosmetology program at Red River Technology Center. After graduation, she plans to pursue a career as a cosmetologist and eventually own her own salon.

- Chelsea Brianne Perkins, 15, is the daughter of Chris Perkins and Michele Presgrove. The sophomore is active in FFA, showing swine and caring for her animals are important responsibilities for her.

Her other school activities include dance and choir.

In the future, Chelsea plans to attend college to pursue a career in either pediatric nursing or ultrasound technology. If all of this can be accomplished at a university near a beach, the future will be perfect.

- Shelby Rice, 17, is the daughter of Raymond and Sheryl Rice. A senior, she is a 2012 valedictorian, Student Council vice president, the senior class president and the National Honor Society president. She has also served as FFA president from 2009-2012.

Shelby is a member of Beta Club, Oklahoma Honor Society, the yearbook staff and the academic team. In 2010, she was named Masonic Lodge Student of the Year and Miss Stephens County Fair.

In the fall, Shelby will attend the University of Oklahoma to study to become a pharmacist.

- Kylee Saville, 17, is the daughter of Tom and Lenora Saville. Kylee is a junior and is active in cheerleading, softball and basketball. She is a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society and the Oklahoma Honor Society.

Kylee was named 2011 Lions Club Student of the Year, 2011 Football Homecoming Queen and a 2012 Homecoming Queen candidate. She is also secretary of her junior class.

After graduating from high school, Kylee plans to attend the University of Oklahoma and pursue a degree in the medical field.

- Teddi Eugenia Southerland, 15, is the daughter of Ted Southerland and Crystal Brown. Teddi is a sophomore, who is active in basketball, softball and cheerleading.

She is a member of Beta Club, Oklahoma Honor Society and the National Honor Society. Teddi also volunteers with the Comet Reading program.

Teddi’s future plans are to attend the University of Oklahoma to become a lawyer. After college, she would like to live in Edmond.

- Christina Stone, 17, is the daughter of Channing Clark. A junior at Velma-Alma, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, HOSA and the Biomedical Science Academy at Red River Technology Center.

She is a member of the basketball, track and academic teams.

Christina’s future plans are to attend medical school. She would like to become both a physical therapist and a physician’s assistant.
