DUNCAN —
Hosted by Stephens County Smart Start at the First Baptist Church, there was a long line waiting to get to all of the booths that lined the wall offering a number of free items and services.
Among the vendors were Sanford Children’s Clinic, Duncan Women’s Clinic, Duncan Family Care, My Dentist, the Child Support Office, Women’s Haven, Delta Head Start Walgreens and several others.
“It’s great, I was worried about the weather keeping everyone home but it’s an annual thing and something people look forward to,” said April Hebert, community coordinator for Smart Start.
“I’m very happy with the turnout.”
An added facet to the event this year were free car safety checks sponsored by Duncan Regional Hospital. Volunteers conducting the inspections were from Comanche Nation and Comanche County Memorial Hospital. They were all trained through the Safe Kids USA foundation.
In case any car seats were found unsuitable, DRH had donated 25 car seats as replacements.
“(The inspectors) main purpose is to install the car seats properly,” said DRH representative Julie Pennypacker.
“If they find any that are expired or on the recall list, we give them a new car seat and take the old one to be destroyed.”
Mingling among the crowd were several mothers and fathers with their children, along with several expectant parents.
The shower was open to all expectant families and those with infants up to the age 1.
It offered information on prenatal care, child development, links to social services, gift bags of books and resource materials and door prizes provided by generous donations from the community and its civic organizations.
“I came because my friend told me about it,” said Lori Morgan, who had had brought along small daughter Everleigh.
“I think (the baby shower) is awesome.”
