Boles, Sanders face February election in school board race

DUNCAN — When the filing period ended Wednesday, two things were certain: Marlow Board of Education would have an election in February and all other school boards in Stephens County will have their open positions filled.

The majority of the positions were filled within the first few hours Monday, when the filing period for all county school boards opened up. The independent school boards and Red River Technology Center had board openings for their No. 3 seat, while Grandview Board of Education had an opening for its No. 1 seat.

By Tuesday, all positions had at least one person file, and Marlow Board of Education got a second person who filed, bringing the need for an election.

As it stands, Brad Boles filed before 9:30 a.m. Monday, and Julie Sanders filed around noon Tuesday. Boles and Sanders will face one another in an election Feb. 12.

Peggy Winton, Stephens County Election Board secretary, said it was surprising to have people filing for positions as quickly as the candidates did and was even more amazing to have all positions filled or up for election by mid-day Tuesday.

“That does happen,” Winton said. “To me, it was history making.”

For the most part, those who filed were incumbents. Only two incumbents didn’t file for re-election. Those included Angela Wolfe for the Empire Board of Education and Robert Greer for the Marlow Board of Education.

Wolfe joined the Empire Board after being elected in 2008. When her term ends, she will be replaced by Jarrel Swanson.

Each of the independent school board have term limits of five years before the need for re-election. Greer was elected in 1998.

From that point, he was re-elected in 2003 against Mark O’Neal who later joined the Marlow School Board. O’Neal is still on the school board with Greer.

In 2008, Greer filed but was unopposed. Boles and Sanders will mark the first election for Marlow Board of Education seat No. 3 since 2003.

Because only two people filed for the Marlow position, there will be no chance for a runoff election. When the result of the February election is revealed, that person will be the new board member. Marlow school board members include O’Neal as president, Greer as vice president, Travis Ortega as clerk, Terry Turner as deputy clerk and Cody Bannister as a board member. Winton was glad the filing period went smoothly and had a lot of interest, including interest for incumbents.

“It was a good filing,” Winton said. “I’m proud of our candidates.”
