School board filings continue countywide

DUNCAN — There is at least one potential candidate for every school board opening in Stephens County, and Marlow Board of Education will have an election for seat No. 3.

While most of the school districts had one person file for the seat coming to vote Feb. 12 by 5 p.m. Monday, Empire Public School was the lone board of education without a person filing. That changed Tuesday when Jarrel Swanson filed for the No. 3 seat for Empire Board of Education, a seat held by Angela Wolfe.

The filing period, which began Monday, will continue from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. If multiple people file for any one of the open board positions, there will be an election for voters to determine who they would rather see in that position. Any seat with only one person filing will go to that person once the current term ends.

For the Marlow Board of Education, two people have filed for the open seat. Brad Boles filed Monday morning, and Julie Sanders filed Tuesday afternoon. They and any other people filing for the Marlow seat will face one another in a February election.

All of the independent school districts and Red River Technology Center Board of Education have a filing period for their No. 3 seats. All of those terms are for a five-year term. Grandview Board of Education is the only different board, filing for the No. 1 seat for a three-year term.

Aside from school boards, two Marlow City Council seats are also open during the filing period. The Ward 1 seat was filed by incumbent Don Ridley on Monday, and Ward 2 incumbent Wes Walker filed for Ward 4 on Tuesday.

So far, neither faces an opponent.

One day of filing still remains for the school boards and the two Marlow City Council seats.

People who have filed so far include:

  •  Duncan — Eric Davis.
  •  Comanche — Garland Davis.
  •  Marlow — Brad Boles and Julie Sanders have both filed for the No. 3 position. Neither is an incumbent to the seat, which is held by Robert Greer through the end of the term. This is the only position where multiple people have filed, and one of only two where the incumbent has not filed.
  •  Velma-Alma — Bobby Southerland.
  •  Empire — Jarrel Swanson filed for the Empire Board of Education on Tuesday. Swanson is not the incumbent of the seat, which has been held by Angela Wolfe since 2008.
  •  Central High — Larry L. Sallee Jr.
  •  Bray-Doyle — Karl Shackelford.
  •  Grandview — Sandy Bowden.
  •  Red River Technology Center — Rodney Love.

    Duncan TV Channel 10 will be running several events from the end of the school year. Each program will begin at 9 a.m. and will re-play every odd hour up to 9 p.m. except for programs more than two hours in length.

    Oklahoma has made some of the deepest cuts in the nation in education funding in recent years, third only to Arizona and Alabama. According to the Oklahoma Policy Institute, “Over the last five years, the state has cut per-pupil education aid for primary and secondary schools by 20 percent, or $706 per student.” At Comanche Public Schools, those cuts translate to $770,000.

    Braught was named Friday as the 2013 recipient of the Crossman Award, which is similar to a valedictorian award. The Crossman Award is the Duncan High School’s top student award. The award was presented during the awards assembly.

Ross Hall, following approval Friday,  by the University of Oklahoma, Cameron University and Rogers State University Board of Regents. Regent Richard R. Dunning, Chairman, requested the name change in recognition of the extraordinary contributions made by Cameron President Cindy Ross over the past  11 years.
