DPS to host Back to School Night

DUNCAN — With the beginning of each school year, the nervous wonder of what to expect from the teacher or where to find the rest rooms will be calmed for some students as they stop by their schools to get acquainted.

Duncan Public School District will have its Back to School Night Tuesday to get students ready for the 2010-11 school year. As with previous years, the times for each grade level with be staggered to give parents with students at different schools an opportunity to make the program at each school.

Superintendent Sherry Labyer said, “It’s a transition from summer back to school. If it’s a student’s first time in the building, it’s a chance for the student to find their classes.”

At the elementary level, the evening provides students with an opportunity to meet their teachers, find their classrooms, put their school supplies in their assigned areas and to find out about classroom rules. Elementary students will get a chance to meet their teachers between 5 to 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

The event also gives parents a chance to fill out paper work and to talk with their children’s teachers.

For middle school and high school students, the evening will serve as an opportunity to find their classes and get acquainted with the idea of a new school year.

“The purpose is so that students can pick up their class schedules and meet their teachers,” Labyer said.

Duncan Middle School will have two nights for Back to School Night. The first will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday and will be geared toward the sixth-graders. The second will be from 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday and will be for the seventh- and eighth-grade students.

Susan Scott, DMS transitional coach, said the sixth-grade program is aimed to prepare the sixth-graders for middle school.

“Sixth grade is such a big transition year,” Scott said.

Scott said a program will take place to inform the incoming sixth-graders about the school rules. But the program should be entertaining, she said. She said there will be a fashion show of what not to wear to school.

At the high school, Back to School Night will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The premise of the evening at the high school will be similar to that of the middle school.

Labyer said the evening will help students prepare for the new school year.

“It starts them off on the right foot,” Labyer said.
