As work was being done to Halliburton Stadium at the Duncan High School, weak water pipes were discovered, leading the Duncan Board of Education into a special meeting Tuesday.
The lone discussion item was approving a plumbing company to replace the water lines at the stadium. By the end of the meeting, two bids had been received by the board.
DPS Superintendent Dr. Sherry Labyer said the lowest and best bid was for $10,735 from Greg Justus Plumbing.
“If you approve this, we’ll have new water lines,” Labyer said.
Halliburton Stadium has been closed since June 7 to allow for the installation of new lights, a sound system and because of electrical work.
As the company in charge of trenching around the stadium began work, it became apparent that the age of the lines was playing a factor, Labyer said. The lines are about 70 years old, and they sprang leaks as the project was being done.
John Hopper, director of transportation and maintenance for the school district, said when the ground was disrupted, the lines began to fall apart.
“The ground was holding the lines together,” Hopper said.
With the lines needing to be replaced, there was some concern about the deadline to have the projects completed. Halliburton Stadium is slated to be reopened by Aug. 13, and a scrimmage is supposed to be played just after that.
Hopper said not all the water lines will be replaced in that time, but the rest rooms should be up and running by the Aug. 13 deadline. Labyer said time is getting tight to have all the projects done, and she wants to make sure things stay on schedule as much as possible.
“We’re getting down to the wire,” Labyer said.
