There’s much that goes on during the summer months at any individual school, regardless if it’s primary, secondary or upper education.
At Cameron University-Duncan, summer hasn’t been a slow time. Besides summer school, the university branch had much work to do to get students ready for the fall 2010 semester.
CU-Duncan Program Director Susan Camp said, “It’s an exciting and very busy time.”
Camp said there has been a lot of work being done to get ready for the beginning of school. She said she is looking forward to an enjoyable school year.
“One of the exciting things on this campus is we have two new instructors,” Camp said.
She said one instructor was hired for English, while the other was hired for math. The new teachers, along with other new hires at the Cameron University main campus, will go through a teacher orientation to prepare for their roles in the school, Camp said.
She said the new teachers aren’t the only teachers Camp is happy to have on board for the 2010-11 school year. She said the other teachers have been assets, and she’s glad to have so many adjunct instructors who can teach from their life experiences.
“We have lots of returning adjunct instructors,” Camp said. “Teaching is kind of something they do in addition to doing their other job. They do a terrific job.”
Other employees being hired include six to eight part-time student workers. Camp said many of the student workers graduated last semester.
This year also marks the beginning of a new program. The university branch is starting a textbook rental program, where students can check out textbooks instead of having to purchase them.
“It’s just an option,” Camp said. “The bookstore will still be open. That’s something we haven’t had before.”
One way the school is getting ready for the school year is by giving placement tests for adults returning to college as students. Camp said the tests would help determine what classes the students should be taking. She said it also helps to figure out each adult student’s readiness for college.
As of late, the main goal to get ready for school is to get all students to finish enrolling. She said she wants to make sure all students have an opportunity to enroll and not miss out on the classes they want to take.
“Enrollment is looking good at the moment,” Camp said. “We have 115 courses here, and many of those are becoming full. We still have plenty left, though.”
She said she’s excited about the new school year and is looking forward to having the students back.
Camp said there were still some things needing be taken care of, but she felt positive things would be ready to go in time for the fall semester.
“We will be ready Aug. 18,” Camp said.
