To get ready for the 2010-11 school year, Red River Technology Center started before school ended in May.
Sure teachers and the administrators are working to get ready for when classes begin, but much of the supplies needed for this semester’s classes were ordered months in advance.
RRTC Superintendent Ken Layn said, “In the spring time, we order all our consumables and curriculums.”
Layn said the summer was a busy time at the technology center. In fact, many of the support staff members, including custodians and technology workers, kept busy to get the school ready for the Aug. 12 first day of school.
“The support staff is busiest during June and July,” Layn said.
He said the custodians were busy preparing the building for the students, while the IT employees worked to install new software for teachers and students.
Layn said it’s a process to prepare for the students, but it’s a worthwhile venture.
We’re always excited to see the students come back,” Layn said.
The RRTC teachers and administrators also kept busy with school-related items during the summer. They all attended a summer conference and participated in professional development activities.
So far, the staff has had orientations for the pre-engineering, cosmetology and health careers courses.
He said he’s excited about the beginning of the school year and is ready to see the students walking the halls again.
“We’re getting ready for when the kids walk in,” Layn said.
Layn said the school aims to meet the needs of the students. This year, the school has added a pre-engineering class to offer information in the field of engineering and to prepare them for the classes they’ll have to take if pursuing a career in engineering.
He said he’s eager to see what response the class gets from the students. The class is just one way the school is getting students ready for what comes next, Layn said.
“We’re preparing them for the next stage in life, whether that’s college or going into the work force,” Layn said.
“We look forward to that.”
He said he feels optimistic about the 2010-11 school year and hopes the students will have a good semester. He said the teachers are also eager to get the school year started.
“We’re looking forward to a great year,” Layn said.
