Book festival to feature Chautaqua-type show

Minister, State Representative to speak Friday evening

Comanche, OK — COMANCHE — More than 50 authors, publishers and illustrators from at least six states will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Border Queen Book Festival (BQBF) in the Asbury Complex at 410 S. Second in Comanche. This is the second year for the free event that allows visitors to meet authors and purchase autographed books.

To kick off this year’s festival, a Chautaqua-type program from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. Friday will feature Dr. Steve Kern, pastor of Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City, and his wife, state Rep. Sally Kern, who represents House District 84.

Dr. Kern will express his views on the evolution vs. creation debate, and Sally Kern will talk about freedom of expression and teaching the controversy in public schools, a bill she has authored.

Kern’s book, “No Other Gods — The Biblical Creation Worldview,” written from a compilation of lectures given over a 20-year period in his class, “The Biblical Creation Worldview,” uses in-depth evidence from science, archeology, history and Scripture to provide an invaluable tool to those who want to give an answer for what they believe.

Kern holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology/psychology in addition to master of divinity and doctor of ministry degrees. He has pastored for 28 years, the last 12 being at Olivet Baptist Church. For the last 20 years, he has studied the evolution/creation debate and taught college classes, taught in conferences and led seminars all over the world dealing with this issue.

Kern has also written two adventure novels that take place in the biblical pre-flood environment: “Eden's Veil” and “Eden’s Son.” He has also written an apologetic of the first 11 chapters of Genesis based on his studies and lectures on this subject.

The Kerns have been married 38 years.

Added attractions for the second BQBF include a local essay contest for middle school children sponsored by Southern Oklahoma Arts Council with recognition and prize money to be given to winners. A performance by an award-winning percussion band is also scheduled.

After the Friday night program, Comanche’s own Cowboy Opry on Rodeo Drive will offer live entertainment beginning at 8 p.m. for a donation. A couple of businesses in the area will also remain open late to welcome visitors.

Among the featured authors will be first-time novelist Rickey Bray of Marlow, who will talk about his book, “Rendezvous Rock.”

For information on lodging in the Comanche area, contact Event Coordinator Tonya Holmes Shook, Rt. 1 Box 69-K, Hastings, OK 73548; e-mail shookum@pldi.net; or call 580-439-6912. Food will be available for purchase at noon at the Asbury Complex.
