DUNCAN — People who turn their taxes in April 15 aren’t procrastinators, they are deadline oriented. April 15 is the last day income tax returns can be mailed and be on time.

It is a quasi-national holiday. Tax preparation Web sites are sure to be flooded and tax preparation software is sure to be difficult to find in the final days leading up to April 15.

All the software and Internet support in the world doesn’t and never will compare to human interaction and assistance offered by tax preparers nationwide. Enter tax-preparing companies like C&W Tax Service LLC.

Dixie Jackson has been preparing taxes for 12 years at C&W Tax Service. C&W has been serving Duncan’s tax needs for 20 years. The late-push often seen on national news outlets isn’t the case in Duncan. Jackson said most people that get their taxes prepared by prepares don’t wait until the deadline. “Surprisingly, it’s not the crush you see on TV,” Jackson said.

Even with the surge of Internet tax services and tax software available, Jackson said preparers handle about 60 percent of all returns nationwide.

The current economic downturn hasn’t had a noticeable effect on the amount of returns prepared at C&W.

“A big percentage of the returns we have prepared have had unemployment benefits on them,” Jackson said. “The complexity of the tax laws is just getting deeper and deeper.”

Local tax preparers had to deal with more than just competition from the Internet and tax software, they had to duke it out with Mother Nature. Electricity, and more importantly, the Internet is vital for tax preparers and the ice storm in January crippled their ability to process tax returns.

Even though they have faced numerous challenges with the weather and an expected downturn that never occurred, C&W Tax Service stands ready to help residents of Duncan with their tax needs. Jackson said 95 percent of their business annually is from Jan. 1 to April 15.

“We are local people, we have loyal clients,” Jackson said. “Not only are they loyal clients, but they are good friends.”
