Time to make the pizza

Business as usual in Comanche

COMANCHE — Thanks to a little bit of foresight and entrepeneurship, Fat Boys Pizza in Comanche was a shining beacon of hope in a blacked out city Friday night.

Customers throughout the area made their way to Fatboys to take in a hot meal and a little warmth while sharing their stories of the winter storm that cut off power to most of the area.

It was all made possible through the efforts of owner Dennis McQuinn, who traveled to Carrollton, Texas Thursday morning to rent a generator.

“We lost electricity at 1:30 a.m. and I couldn’t afford to lose my produce,” McQuinn said. “And my customers depend on me to be here. We opened up at 3:30 p.m. Friday and my wife was texting people and letting them know that we would be open.”

The trip to Carrollton, a suburb of Dallas, was relatively uneventful although the trip back to Comanche was a little more challenging with the trailer hauling the generator.

McQuinn’s son stocked up on diesel and rolled into action Friday night. Business was triple the normal amount of a normal Friday night with another onslaught expected Saturday.

“People need us here because they can’t cook at home,” McQuinn said.

Fatboys is in its sixth year of business in Comanche. McQuinn moved to Comanche looking for a place to raise his family and found a home while becoming an integral part of the community.

“We worked at several places and moved here because my son had a knife pulled on him,” McQuinn said. “We have lived here ever since.”

“They appreciated that we were open and that they had a chance to get a hot meal,” McQuinn said.
