Duncan will face Ada in first round of playoffs

Guthrie ruled eligible, re-claims top seed in District 5A-1

DUNCAN — Duncan's opponent for Friday's first round of the Class 5A football playoffs has finally been decided. The Demons will face Ada at 7:30 p.m. at Halliburton Stadium.

District 5A-1 champion Guthrie was ruled eligible in an OSSAA board meeting on Wednesday morning. The top-ranked Blue Jays (10-0, 8-0) had originally been oredered for forfeit eight games due to a dual-residency concern.

Duncan (7-3, 7-1) finished second in District 5A-2, meaning they were set to host the third-place team from 5A-1. With the insertion of Guthrie into the bracket, Carl Albert drops to second in that district, Ada to third and Deer Creek to fourth.

The Blue Jay player in question, senior receiver Clint Simek, has been ruled ineligible and won't be allowed to play in the playoffs. Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins will also sit out.

If Duncan wins, it will face the winner of McAlester (10-0) and Tulsa Central (8-2).

    Update: Carberry's plane arrived as scheduled back in Oklahoma at Will Rogers International Airport.

    Two tornados were spotted and National Weather Service confirmed that one touched down at Denver International Airport around 2:18 p.m. today.
    Duncan resident Jamie Carberry was going through the security checkpoints as she waited to board a plane home after a short vacation there. That’s when the alert was sounded and people began taking cover.

    People at Denver International Airport are taking shelter, and there are unconfirmed reports that a tornado touched down at Denver International Airport.

  • Hastings to close Duncan store

    Corporate officials with Hasting’s Entertainment informed its employees early today at the Duncan Hastings Entertainment store that their store will be closing Aug. 9.
    This news came during a mandatory store meeting, where two corporate representatives, district and store managers, were present to make the announcement, confirmed a store employee, who spoke with The Banner after the meeting.

  • Marlow teen faces charges of murder in death of Alyssa Wiles

    Update: 3:09 p.m. Ray appeared in court today and is being held without bond on the charges listed below in this story.

    Michael Anthony Ray of Marlow will be be charged with Murder in the First Degree-Deliberate Intent, in Stephens County District Court, today, in the death of Alyssa Wiles, 14, of Duncan.

  • DPD Chief Ford: "We have made 2 arrests" in death of Duncan teen girl

    Update: 6:56 p.m. Duncan Police Chief Dan Ford said that the 14-year-old suspect has been taken back into custody and transported to the juvenile detention facility in Lawton. He said there was not a bed available for the boy earlier in the day, therefore the reason for his release into his mother's custody.     Two juvenile boys have been questioned and one remains in custody following the death of a 14-year-old Duncan girl who was discovered in her home by her father Monday afternoon upon his arrival at home from work.

    4:35 p.m. Firefighters are busy at the scene of a house fire in Meridian, three houses north of Allison’s Flooring. The house is reportedly fully-involved and one person may have been injured.

    Update: 7 p.m. The tornado warning expired for Stephens County and there does not appear to be any further threat for area residents.

    A tornado warning has been issued for eastern Stephens County and sirens did sound in Duncan and Marlow.
