Cowboys at 3 p.m.: OSU putting graduate assistants to work

STILLWATER — The Oklahoma State football is already feeling the benefit of the new NCAA rule allowing for a team to have four graduate assistants working with players - as opposed to the previous two grad assistant limit. With OSU looking for somebody to fill the hole left by Joe DeForest in coaching the special teams, the job has fallen to graduate assistant Ty Linder "I asked our coaches to look around for a guy who could come in as a graduate assistant who could help with structure and organization on special teams and his name came up," OSU coach Mike Gundy said. "Obviously he's been in this league. He does a lot of our organization and has a role in every special team unit. "He's not really the coordinator, because he's not doing it all. But he's got more special teams responsibility than anybody on our staff." Linder is a former Texas Tech linebacker who spent four years on the Red Raider staff when his playing career ended in 2007. Gundy stressed the importance of the new rule, as it allows young, aspiring coaches the opportunity to get into the profession as a graduate assistant. "He came in with us in the spring and he couldn't coach, so we didn't let him start coaching until August because the rule wouldn't let him," Gundy said. "And without that rule, he doesn't do it. That rule was one of the better decisions they've made because it allows young coaches to get into our profession legally. They can now get out on the field and coach, which they should be able to do."
