DUNCAN —
Sam and Helen Jones celebrated their 66th wedding anniversary Saturday, Feb. 12, with a family gathering in their Duncan home.
Samuel Morris Jones and Helen Louise Troutt were married on Feb. 12, 1945 in Durant. Rev. J. W. Wade performed the private ceremony in his home.
At the time they married, Sam was serving in the United States Navy. He served from 1944 until 1946, during World War II. Helen was a licensed cosmetologist but soon decided that she wanted to devote her time to being a full time wife, mother and homemaker. Though friends and family benefited from Helen's hair styling skills she never worked outside the home again. After Sam's discharge from the Navy, the couple lived briefly in Boswell, and then in Durant. In 1947 they moved to Muskegon, Mich., where Sam worked as a machinist until late 1948, when they moved to Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1950 they moved to Duncan when Sam accepted a job with Halliburton, where he worked 33 years, retiring in 1983. During his Halliburton career Sam worked as a machinist and electronic assembler. From 1958 to 1972 Sam also owned and operated a television repair service in Duncan. In 1985 Sam and Helen moved to Kenefic, close to the area where they met. But in 1990 they returned to Duncan, the place they had raised their five children and the place that felt most like home. For the past 40 years, Sam and Helen have been avid bluegrass fans. They both enjoy playing bluegrass music and created a family bluegrass band called The Bluegrass Trailblazers in 1975, consisting of several children and grandchildren. Though the original band no longer exists, Sam and Helen continue to use their talents entertaining with other bluegrass friends at local nursing homes and for local area events, when their health allows. Sam currently owns and operates J & J Machine Shop, in Duncan.
Sam and Helen have five children. Their son and daughter-in-law Robert and Shernell Jones live in Duncan; son and daughter-in-law Mike and Mary Jones, live in Howe, Texas; son Randy Jones, lives in Duncan, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Wayne Treece, live in Comanche, and daughter and son-in-law Lisha and Joel Henderson, live in Foster. The Jones' have 13 grandchildren and 16 great-children.
